Mountain Creek, formerly known as Vernon Valley/Great Gorge, is the closest major ski area to New York City, only 50 miles away. Intrawest, the Canadian resort company which owns heavyweights such as Whistler Blackcomb and Tremblant, is investing big bucks to upgrade just about everything at Mountain Creek including snowmaking and lifts. The facilities for beginners are especially welcome at a resort where the ski school has notched up more than a million clients over the years. The ski area extends over three mountains and lifts are open until 10:00 p.m. Mountain Creek has a good range of slopeside accommodation and facilities including the slopeside spa centre (stay there and ski for free) and an off-season action park featuring 75 rides.
